Days of Wine and Roses
Today I spent time with Cellar director Christine Ricketts trying a range of Hunter Valley wines from the very famous Rothbury Estate. Classic new vintage Hunter Semillon, an aged Semillon, a blend of Semillon and Sauvignon, a Cabernet blend, an elegant Hunter Shiraz and finally finishing with a Tawny. All six were very "session-able", especially the SSB which was superbly neutral and very dangerous. The top two for me were the 2013 Semillon which had honey and stone fruit roundness in the palate but with the acids still holding well and making the wine refreshing. The Hunter Black label Shiraz 2016 was delicious without being overblown like so much Shiraz. This is elegant medium weight wine that still has flavour and intrigue. So that's the wine, but now to the wine and song match.
I would match the Shiraz with Vampires Kiss from Million Star Motel. Smooth strong but not overpowering. And the aged Semillon I would match with Railway Institute from Vladivostok Air. A song that has been around for a while but just continues to improve and develop.
